Columns

From 1997 to 2004, I wrote occasional columns for the Independent’s Saturday series ‘Faith & Reason’ and its seasonal series ‘Arguments for Easter’ and ‘Meanings of Christmas’. On the right are links to a dozen of the best.

Here are two pieces I wrote for Third Way about Samson and suicide bombing and Moses and terror.

I’ve also contributed a number of shorter and pithier pieces to Third Way’s long-running series ‘Icon of the Month’. I love writing these, and over the years have tried to deconstruct:

the Titanic

the Union Jack

McDonald’s

the year 2000

the tiger

the Rolling Stones

Pokémon

the F word

John Lennon

Africa

Winnie-the-Pooh

King Kong

nuclear weapons

the heavens

Tintin

the swastika

the innocent civilian

Che Guevara

the polar bear

Dying to kill

(Other) animal rights

Shafts of feeling

More precious than people?

Fair pay

Football and fair trade

On the
12th day of Christmas

Reality is magic

On Mothering Sunday

On Boxing Day

The vanishing sparrow

On the eve of the year 2000
