Posing before our descent into Charyn Canyon
| In September 2005, my
friend Neil Warren and I took eight travellers on
a 14-day tour of Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan. We saw
the endless steppe, vast lakes and celestial
mountains, stayed in local family homes and in a
rusting space observatory. In all, we covered 2,000
kilometres by road, as well as flying from the south
of the country to the north and returning in a luxurious
train. |

Two of the party commented that they wouldn't
have missed it for the world.
